Why the heck would we do this? Well, my husband and I are a little project obsessed at the moment, and we wanted to move the Lettuce Grow around without killing ourselves.
Now the Lettuce Grow website actually sells a dolly or stand for the plants but we wanted something a little different, not plastic. We’re not big fans of plastic in general. It’s not that we’re environmentally conscious (though we should be), but it has more to do with the durability and risk of damage in using plastic. Plastic and heat are not best friends, and didn’t want to risk ruining the Lettuce Grow without a dolly (twisting it against the concrete would not be good). So we decided that we did want to go for a dolly, but that it would be cheaper and easier to make our own.
We made our own wooden dolly that would stand up to the heat and rain, as well as not cause issues on “The Tower” (what I’ve been calling the Lettuce Grow lately).
So off we went to our local hardware store to pick up the following :
- Treated Lumber (We needed 6, 24 inch pieces)
- Construction Screws (pictures below)
- Some wood stain (picture below)
My husband is a bit of a perfectionist and this certainly isn’t his best work (he’ s a home-builder), however, it gets the job done well. It seemed to hold my weight and the weight of the Lettuce Grow easily. I chose to stain the wood with some wood stain that we had lying around the house.
Overall, this project took about 20 minutes to assemble and screw, and another 30 minutes for the staining and drying. All in all, the project was quick and easy, and cheaper in the long run compared to Lettuce Grow. It was fifty dollars or so from Lettuce Grow but only cost us about thirty dollars to make. It won’t wear and tear the tower and it will last for several years against the outside elements.
